Dyer Street School is a contributing school, centered in the southern part of Avalon, Lower Hutt, New Zealand, close to the Park Avenue shops. It is accessible from Oxford Terrace through Roberts Street, or Lincoln Avenue off High Street.

Our students are part of the Dyer Street Learning Community which includes School, Kindergarten and Before and After School Care (operating from the school hall).  We hope to have a new Early Childhood Centre opening at the end of our Junior School by mid-2016.

We are fortunate to have a large playing field, netball/tennis courts, and two playgrounds. To ensure the students are safe in the playground, we offer a high ratio of adults in the playground and have a number of options for students including lunchtime sporting activities, library and junior deck space.  As a PB4L school we promote and teach under our 5 Values (see PB4L page)

Dyer Street School is proud of its achievements in special  programmes, such as Perceptual Motor Programmes, Reading Recovery, choir, inquiry learning, Habits of Mind and thinking skills, in addition to the New Zealand Curriculum Framework.

Regular news of the school can be found on our website, monthly newsletter, or on the noticeboard in the foyer.

A message from our Principal:

Tena Koutou and warm greetings to you all

The decision of where to enrol your child at school is an important one and I want to thank you for taking the time to consider Dyer Street School as one of your options.

I hope that you will find the information that we have available is helpful and provides some insight into what school life is like at our school.  One piece of advice that I would offer to any prospective school age parent is to visit the school, have a talk with the Principal and get a feel for the place.  Seeing a school in action will be much richer experience than just reading about us on a page.

That said I am happy to boast about my brilliant, committed staff, with a depth of knowledge around student learning that they use to give students a great start to school.  One of the features of our new entrant room is our covered deck area, which is similar to that of a kindergarten or daycare centre, giving students a gentle transition from the relative freedom of early childhood education into the rigours of school life.

Please feel free to contact the school to make an appointment to come in for a visit, we would be delighted to show you around and answer any questions you might have.
