Kia ora e te whānau,
We have officially reached the midway point of the term, and time is absolutely flying by. Our tamariki have been incredibly busy with their learning, and it is wonderful to see the energy and enthusiasm around our kura every single day.
We had some fantastic reasons to celebrate last week! First, a massive milestone for our school community: we officially welcomed our 200th student to Dyer Street School! Alongside this growth, we also want to acknowledge our incredible runners who made it through to the Interzone Cross Country.
A huge congratulations to:
- Mila Turley
- Munira Ismail
- Rhydian O’Riada
- Tane Trenberth
- Tyler Weldon-Smith
We are so proud of your efforts and wish you all the very best for your next race at McEwan Park on Tuesday, 13th June.
This year, we have set an attendance target for our kura: we are aiming for at least 73% regular attendance across the whole school. To clarify, “regular attendance” means a student is at school for 90% or more of the term. In Term 1, we achieved a 64% regular attendance rate. However, as we head further into Term 2, winter sickness inevitably kicks in and plays a part.
If your child has extended absences, you may receive a notification through the Hero app inviting you to a meeting with me. We want to work proactively with our whānau to support your unique situation and see how we can help get your tamariki back to school.
To help us keep our tracking accurate, please remember to let the office know if your child is going to be away. As a rule of thumb, if we have not heard from you and have no reason for an absence by 9:30 am, we will mark your child as truant. A quick message makes a massive difference, so please ensure you keep us in the loop! Ngā mihi nui,
Over the last two weeks, I have been carefully formulating the recruitment process for our next Deputy Principal. There are always many factors to consider when making such an important appointment for our kura to ensure we maintain our positive momentum and support our tamariki effectively.
To ensure stability and continuity, we will be internally covering Meg Waghorn’s Deputy Principal and SENCO (Special Education Needs Coordinator) roles for the duration of Term 3.
The next few weeks provide a fantastic opportunity to transition two of our team leaders into their respective leadership roles for next term. Both will continue to teach their current classrooms, supported by release time throughout the week:
- Anand Ranchod will be taking on the SENCO role, alongside leading our ongoing HERO app implementation.
- Colleen Epapara will be stepping into the operations, communication, and staff release components of the DP role.
We are incredibly fortunate to have such capable leaders within our own staff to step into these spaces.
The formal recruitment process for our permanent Deputy Principal will take place toward the end of this term. Our goal is to make an appointment early in Term 3, with the successful applicant officially starting at the beginning of Term 4.
I feel highly confident in our team’s ability to step into these roles and continue the fantastic work we have all achieved so far this year. Thank you for your ongoing support of our staff and school community.
Ngā mihi nui,
Lee Ewington
Principal, Dyer Street School
