Kia ora e te whānau, 

As we reach the midpoint of the term, it’s wonderful to reflect on how much ground we’ve already covered. The first six weeks have been packed with exciting opportunities for our tamariki and whānau. Highlights so far include our swimming sessions in Weeks 1 and 2, the Base 5 Interschool sports event, and our recent Mana hui, which provided a valuable chance for whānau to connect with teachers about their child’s progress and achievement. 

Excitement is building at our kura as practices for our upcoming production of Honk Jr. have really ramped up over the last couple of weeks. Our students are making fantastic progress across the board, bringing the scenes to life and diving deep into their acting, costumes, and prop work. A special shoutout goes to the tamariki who have been hard at work every Tuesday afternoon. These students have been busy contributing their creative ideas to our ticket and poster designs, as well as creating some amazing props for the stage. Finally, a huge thank you to Addi Peters! Addi’s passion, energy, and absolute commitment are the driving forces behind this production, and we are so grateful for everything being done behind the scenes to ensure Honk Jr. is a massive success. Tickets will be available for purchase on Monday, so keep an eye out in Hero for the details.

We’ve been working alongside the talented team at Toi Digital to create some new house logo designs over the past few weeks. The process has been collaborative, with both our tamariki and kaimahi having a real say in shaping the artwork. We have one final round of feedback to complete before officially confirming them, but we couldn’t wait to share a sneak peek of the awesome iterations so far (see below!). Looking ahead to next term, we will also be exploring options for new house t-shirts and hoodies so everyone can represent their house with pride.

To help ensure the safety of our tamariki, please note that all school gates are locked just after 9:00 am each day. If you are coming into school to drop off or pick up your child during school hours, please use the main Dyer Street office entrance as the single point of entry. We also kindly ask that you remember to sign in and out using the Vistab system at the office. The gates will be reopened around 2:30 pm ahead of home time. Thank you in advance for your understanding and support in keeping our school secure.

School Policies & Procedures – Feedback Welcome

Dyer Street School uses SchoolDocs to manage all school policies and procedures. SchoolDocs provides an online platform that enables board members, staff, and whānau to easily view and give feedback on our policies.

This term we are reviewing:

• School Community Engagement Policy (board)
• Inclusive School Culture (board)
• Enrolment
• Student Attendance (board)
• Student Uniform/Student Dress Expectations
• Concerns and Complaints Policy (board)

Using SchoolDocs helps ensure that our policies:

• Are up to date and aligned with Ministry of Education best-practice guidelines
• Meet current New Zealand legislation, ERO requirements, and audit expectations
• Are reviewed regularly to ensure ongoing compliance and relevance

What being part of SchoolDocs means:

• All school policies and procedures are online and accessible to our whole school community
• Content is monitored and updated in response to legislative changes and sector guidance
• Reviews are streamlined through a supported review process
• Policies are updated every term as part of scheduled and internal reviews

From the School Office

If for any reason your child is unable to come to school, please let the office know before 9:15 am. 

Please keep us up to date with any changes to contact details, including email addresses, home addresses, and phone numbers. You can email updates to office@dyerstreet.school.nz

With Winter in full swing and cold weather, sickness is setting in. If your child requires inhalers or medicine at school, please visit the office to complete a medical form and discuss your requirements. 

We also have quite a few students who need spare changes of clothing. Making sure your child has a spare change in their bag, especially long pants, will help when they get muddy or soiled. 

Toys at School

We understand that children want to bring their special toys to school to show their friends. However, we discourage this as, more often than not, the toys end up broken or missing, which is very upsetting for the children, and they can also cause a distraction in class. Please support us in this by ensuring your child does not bring their toys to school, as we take no responsibility for broken, lost or missing toys. 

Water Only School 

Another reminder that we are a water-only school. Please leave cordial, soda and other non-water drinks at home. Students are free to fill up their water bottles any time, and water fountains are free on the school grounds. Thank you.

Dyer Street School has a small but friendly fundraising committee that works together to raise funds and put on fun events. We are in need of some more people to come on board this year. There is an active Facebook group as well as a mailing list to receive posts on Hero. The committee has plans for more online hui this year to make sure those who can’t attend in-person meetings can be more involved.

The next meeting is Monday 7th September at 7:30 p.m. in the school library. We’d love anyone who would like to be involved to come along. If you can’t make it but have ideas or would like to be kept in mind as a volunteer, please email colleene@dyerstreet.school.nz or join the Facebook group: Fundraising Facebook Group

Thank you to those who donated goods for our Father’s Day Raffle. Tickets have gone home, but there are spares at the office for those interested in selling more. These two prizes will be drawn by Matua Lee on Thursday, 3rd September.

The book fair is OPEN now in the library. Feel free to come along. EFTPOS & Cash are available payment methods. Our lovely staff & parent helpers will be in the library to assist you. It opened on Thursday the 17th in the afternoon. It was due to close on Wednesday morning, but unfortunately, it will finish 2 sessions earlier. This will now be Tuesday 1st September (after the morning session). See you there! 

Towards the end of last term, our Kapa Haka Rōpū performed at Hutt Fest at Walter Nash. We were lucky enough to perform right before the power cut. Here are some photos from this event. Touch Registrations are open for Term 4 and close on Tuesday 2nd September. Late registrations will not be accepted. 

Our students play in a school-based competition run by Total Touch.

All games for Years 1- 6 will be held on Thursday afternoons at Fraser Park. The Term 4 season is 6 weeks, starting on Thursday, 29 October – Thursday, 3 December. 

Most teams will be mixed teams with mixed abilities. 

It is important to remember that if a student registers to be in a team they need to be committed for all 6 games in TERM 4. Games are not cancelled due to cold weather or rain. They are only cancelled if the grounds are closed.

Costs:

The costs for touch will be invoiced by Dyer Street School once we have finalised the teams and payments will need to be made by Thursday, 29 October. 

Adult Helpers

Each team will need at least one adult to be the ‘adult helper’.

Weet-Bix Kids TRY-athalon registrations are now open for 2027. We had a few students attend individually this year. Next year, it would be a nice opportunity to have enter a school team.  We will have the marquee set up for all the children to hang out and recover in during the event. For more information and to join the team – click on the link below. Enter as ‘Dyer Street School Team’ and select ‘Wellington’ for the location. Students aged 6 and up are eligible to enter.

Our DSS Mystics Netball Team have their last game on Monday 31st August. Thank you to Whaea Col for coaching this season and Eden Ropiana for assisting with scoring on the sideline. Thank you to Hana, Tāne, Mylee, Mila, Anna, Harper & Kaylah for being an amazing Year 5&6 Netball Team!
